Whisky / Whiskey

Whisky is a dark distilled spirit made from grains like barley, corn, rye, or wheat. It's distilled in many places around the world, including Scotland, Ireland, England, the United States, Canada, India and Japan to name just a few.   Different rules apply to different countries as to how a whisky must be created.  All whisky must be 40% ABV or above.
Key Types of Whisky:
Blended Whisky:  Blended Whisky is a type of whisky produced using a combination of whiskies from differnet distilleries and is a blend of malt and grain whisky. About 90% of all whisky sold is blended whisky.
Single Malt Whisky: Single malt whisky is whisky made from malted barley and comes from a single distillery.  It does not mean it is a single barrel / cask which is different.  For a whisky to be classified as single malt (under Scotch Whisky Association rules) it must be made from only water, malted barley, and yeast in a traditional batch distillation process using copper ‘pot’ stills and aged in oak barrels.  
Blended Malt Whisky:  Blended malt whisky is whisky made from malted barley which has been blended with malt whisky from two or more distilleries.
Single Cask / Barrel: Single Cask / Barrel is a release of whisky that has been bottled from a single cask or single barrel.
Scotch Whisky: Scotch is a term that is mistakenly often used to define all whisky.  Scotch whisky is whisky made in Scotland according to Scotch Whisky Association rules.
Bourbon Whiskey: Bourbon whiskey is a type of American whiskey that has been made in the USA, barrel-aged in virgin charred American white oak barrels for at least 2 years and made from a mash with at least 51% corn. 95% of Bourbon comes from Kentucky, but it can be made outside of Kentucky.

Rye Whisky / Whiskey: Rye is a whisky that is made from a mash with at least 51% rye, which is a a grass grown as a grain and gives a spicier flavour to the spirit.  When made in the USA it is called Rye Whiskey and when made elsewhere it is rye whisky.
