HMRC Digital Platform Reporting Requirements

Digital platforms (e.g., Vinted, eBay, Airbnb, online Auction, Shops with online presence) must report seller income to HMRC annually by January 31 for the previous calendar year. Requirements cover users selling ≥30 items or earning ≈£1,700 (€2,000) annually. Platforms must collect seller details (name, address, DOB, National Insurance number/TIN) and submit them, providing a copy to the seller.

Key Aspects of HMRC Digital Platform Reporting

  • Timeline: Reports must be submitted by 11:59 pm on January 31 following the reporting year (e.g., 2025 data due Jan 31, 2026).
  • Reportable Sellers: Platforms must report users who are paid for:
    • Sale of goods.
    • Provision of personal services (e.g., cleaning, delivery).
    • Rental of immovable property (e.g., holiday homes).
  • Thresholds: Sellers with fewer than 30 sales and less than €2,000 (~£1,700) in income are generally not required to be reported, though rules can be complex.
  • Information Collected:
    • Individuals: Full name, address, date of birth, National Insurance number (or TIN if abroad).
    • Businesses: Legal name, address, company registration number, tax identification numbers.
    • Financials: Total annual income, number of transactions, fees, commissions, or taxes withheld.
  • Consequences: Failure to report accurately or on time can lead to penalties.

What Sellers Need to Know

  • This is not a new tax; it is a data-sharing requirement.
  • If you exceed £1,000 in trading income, you may need to register for Self Assessment, even if the platform reports your data.
  • Platforms must share the reported information with the seller by the January 31 deadline.
